Take on a chess variant where captured pieces unleash a death rattle to strike back at their attackers.
How to play
- Select a white piece to view its legal moves and attacks.
- Move your piece to an empty square or attack a black piece.
- Watch out for the death rattle: captured pieces will attack the highest-value enemy in range.
- Protect your Ember King and try to checkmate or capture the black king.

Revenge Chess: Chain Reaction modifies standard chess by giving every piece a death rattle. When a piece is captured, it immediately strikes back at the most valuable enemy in its normal attack range. This can trigger a chain reaction of up to 12 captures across the board. The goal remains the same: checkmate or capture the opponent's king. You play as White against the computer, navigating these explosive trades until one king falls or the game ends in a stalemate.
Tips
- Before capturing, check if the enemy piece can hit your valuable pieces with its death rattle.
- Use the death rattle to your advantage by positioning your pieces to trigger chain reactions.
- Shield Knights (pawns) that reach the opposite end of the board ascend into Ember Queens.

How does the death rattle work?
When a piece is captured, it immediately attacks the highest-value enemy piece within its normal attack range. This can cause a chain reaction of up to 12 captures.
Can I undo a move?
Yes, you can use the Undo button to reverse your last move, as long as the computer is not currently thinking.
What are the piece values?
Shield Knights are worth 1, Paladins and Sword Clerics are 3, Stone Towers are 5, Ember Queens are 9, and Ember Kings are 99.
